* Spring Day: A timeless meditation on friendship, sorrow, and regret, “Spring Day” is a brilliant example of BTS’ unique ability to sum up complex emotions into universal pop songs. The soaring 2017 power ballad is full of lush vocals and soulful rapping, as the group movingly evokes powerful feelings of loss, memory, and hope for the future: “The morning will come again/Because no darkness or no season can last forever,” they sing. Widely understood as a tribute to the predominantly teenage passengers who drowned in the Sewol Ferry disaster of 2014, “Spring Day” creates powerful art out of deep desolation and remains arguably the most beloved song in the group’s rich catalog. —J-H.K.
* I Need U: In the first two years of their career, BTS made rebellious, angsty hip-hop music dedicated to people who felt suffocated by societal expectations. But by becoming more vulnerabile on their impeccably composed hit “I Need U,” the septet nabbed their first win on a South Korean music show. The song sees them switching between hope and hopelessness as Suga declares in the intro, “Because of you, I’m broken,” with his bandmates quickly following, “I need you girl/You’re so beautiful.” After the verses build with the desperation of one-sided love, the song explodes into a transcendent dance chorus. Its gentle synth wind instruments almost cruelly convince listeners that everything will be OK. But BTS knows better. —J-H.K.

A diverse list, though I am surprised what songs/groups did and did not make the list, as well as some of the rankings.
Also, I wish there was a playlist of all the songs.
There could easily be many more BTS songs on the list.. at least a couple more on top 10, that’s for sure!
Petty complaint but navigating these articles on mobile is miserable. The ads slow it down so much 🤬
I’m kind of surprised at some of the more recent picks like Le Sserafim and New Jeans. How can you tell that these songs/groups will stand the test of time already? I wouldn’t have added them if it were me.
Also kind of surprised Gangnam Style isn’t higher? Doesn’t the whole world know that song? It’s a household name type of song.
I’m not even someone knows a lot about K-Pop yet I still feel like this list isn’t right.
Like they started with *”we celebrate the biggest and most ingenious hits that were either musically groundbreaking, or influential to how K-pop is marketed and consumed”* and then placed ***Gangnam Style*** at #23?
What about songs like ***Some*** (BOL4), ***What Is Love?*** (TWICE) etc.? And no hate to LE SSERAFIM but ***Antifragile*** in the Top 100 songs in the **history** of Korean pop music?
I mean, even within an artists’ discography, I don’t understand the criteria. For instance, when it comes to SEVENTEEN, what would you rank higher – ***Don’t Wanna Cry*** or ***VERY NICE***?
both spring day and I need you deserve it but there needed to be a lot more BTS songs in it, anyways these things are subjective so I don’t care about these rankings but I still would’ve liked to see songs like Black Swan, Run, Fake Love, IDOL, The Truth Untold, Butterfly etc in there
Rolling Stone and their controversial lists…
My take on these lists is that they’re largely arbitrary and created to generate clicks. However, I’ll agree with both Spring Day and I Need U being included.

Finally, it’s out! I contributed to @/RollingStone’s top 100 #KPOP songs extravaganza, which is out today. All the music critics were asked to send in their top selections. From there, the editors had the difficult job of paring our choices down to just 100. My reviews include two songs by @/bts.bighitofficial, as well as hits by @/42psy42, @/superjunior, @/blobyblo, #YooJaeHa, @/realmithrajin, @/realtukutz, #KimSisters, @/rain_oppa, @/official_monsta_x and #LeeNanYoung.
Some of my selections that did not make it in are “Answer” by @/ateez_official_ and “Sorry” by @/official_therose.
The bulk of my Kpop exposure is BTS so I didn’t know that No. 1 is where ‘ Uhuh, listen boy… My first love story’ comes from 😂
