So…I have a hunch that the discussion on the other sub might end up going away because they usually have a bit more moderation on touchier topics so I’m going to cross-post my comment here:
Oh…no that is actually very disappointing.
I worry that any genuine discourse on this is going to get buried under the mess of what recently just happened. But this is a really frustrating thing to see from someone who had consistently shown care and effort to understand women’s issues.
I genuinely don’t know what to do or how to feel right now. I know in the past some of the members had mentioned his music but it was so long ago I thought they had quietly figured out that this was not it…
When will the internet learn you can like a person and not love everything they listen to and do. Everyone would have more peaceful lives if they realized someone listening to a song doesn’t necessarily reflect their personal views too. I can love Namjoon and think he’s a great person, while simultaneously hating Chris Brown and the things he’s done with a fiery passion.
Just as I did not think that Frank Ocean’s “Bad Religion” made Namjoon an Islamophobe, I don’t think Namjoon listening to Chris Brown means he hates women. I don’t listen to Chris Brown and I don’t support Chris Brown at all myself, but I also recognize there is zero reason for me to police what a grown man listens to.
I’m not saying people shouldn’t be offended, but the constant pearl clutching over everything the members do is absurd and getting out of hand. If BTS don’t come back together, it’s going to be because the fandom is pushing them to their limits with the constant outrage. BTS can’t breathe without people being mad at them anymore.
well this is incredibly disappointing. i would hope that he at least knows enough about how horrible chris brown is to not publicly promote him but i guess not.
Oh boy…this is going to go sideways again isn’t it? Not that CB isn’t rightfully a bad dude but I’m cringing at the thought of how much hate Joon is about to get for this one..seeing as some have already started to… Sigh 😪
noooo!! and he just had his last song share controversy die down.
This is SO not the same as the Bad Religion idiocy. CB is a known abuser, has been abusive towards multiple women, nearly killed Rihanna. Supporting CB is in no way even close to the same as supporting Bad Religion. Frank Ocean wrote a beautiful song comparing the hurt of being rejected by homophobic organized religion to the pain of unrequited love. He is not an abusive, awful person (that we know of). CB has contributed some unoriginal pop songs that could very well have come from any other human on the planet, while simultaneously enacting violence against women. He has shown absolutely no remorse, and continues to have the same pattern of abuse in his relationships. It’s not the same thing at ALL.
🙄🙄🙄 tsk Namjoon.
Why though is CB still being supported by so many people in the industry, it’s mindboggling.
He was dancing to the song last week no one mentioned anything then… but I can understand the disappointment alot of people still listen to him sadly :/
Edit: I don’t understand how CB still has a platform/a survivor myself so can understand the disappointment of Joon being a feminist and sharing the song I don’t hate him for it but don’t support CB either.
Oof, that is *disappointing*
Given that he had all those talks about misogyny etc (back when). This is not a misunderstanding of lyrics or interpretation or whatever. The behaviour of Chris Brown is on so many levels documented and absolutely disgusting.
Violence against women (not only Rihanna), Misogyny, violence in general, at least being in them company of homophobes, PUNCHING FRANK OCEAN 🧐, hit and run, felony assault, asaault, assault, assault, assault, (I’m pretty sure I missed some incidents), restraining order by multiple women, sexual assault, and [more](https://people.com/music/chris-brown-a-timeline-of-the-singers-legal-trouble/)
This is NOT! a case of ‘i have my opinions’ unless your opinion is to support and advertise a known …Chris Brown. And yes, by posting the song in his stories where it is projected to millions of people is advertisement and unfortunately endorsement.
As a survivor…this one … this one hurts.
I get that no man is perfect, that many (MANY) idols have praised CB and will continue to do so, but damn. Really, Joon?
Edit: There was a discussion top posted about this the other day in a large kpop sub and the comments looked…very different from here. Whew. Lots of different views on this one apparently.
My hope is that someone Namjoon trusts and respects will make him aware of the reality of the CB situation, why it feels so problematic, and why so many feel it is different from the Frank Ocean situation. Which could then allow Namjoon to differentiate the reaction to this post from what must look at times like a wall of general background hate and noise. Namjoon has shown he cares and wants to learn. I want to trust that he can learn from this as well.
There is no universe where Namjoon, a avid scholar of American musical history and pop culture, has not come across news of the MANY incidents of Chris Brown’s horrific abuse and treatment of women. And this just makes it even more disappointing.
And before anyone thinks of defending this, ask yourselves: could you stare at any of the women in your life and tell them that you still enjoy Chris Brown’s music?
oh i dont like this at all
When I saw his insta with that it was a gut punch. As an sa survivor and cb history this one was an instant oh no Joonie. I’m not going to rag on him of course but I am curious if he knows how problematic cb is
Here we go again with people policing what can the members listen to or not. So now Nam can’t listen to music anymore. A MUSICIAN can’t listen to music? BREAKING NEWS!!!!! EVERYONE ON THE MUSIC INDUSTRY HAS A DARK PAST!!!
In that case we should stop listening to music! And should cancel every singer altogether.
This same thing happens when they announce a collab with a western artist half the fans would be like “awesome, can’t wait” “collab of the century” “I’ll be streaming” and the other half doing a background check to see what dirt they can find n the western artist to say that the collab was a bad idea and to cancel bangtan and to say how disappointed they’re with their decisions and bla bla bla. As if they’re going to change who they are just for a song.
ARMY love to say that they hate kpop and kpopers but they act exactly they same way a kpoper would. Overanalyzing a small issue such as listening to a song and gets blown up as if he would change his personality just for that.
As much as you hate Chris Brown every kpop idol at least once in their life dreamed of singing and dancing like him. Proof are the many dance covers you can find with a little search on YouTube.
It doesn’t mean that they wanted to become an abuser too right? I don’t like that artist either but to hate nam over the actions of an artist which he probably has never said hi to seems extreme and obsessive at least to me.
Another thing is the double standard people have with the tannies. Many people even more after all his scandals have at least had one song of his on their playlist but when the tannies does it, it becomes a huge issue. You say “he should not have shared it cause he has a huge platform” BREAKING NEWS!! that is his personal acct and he can share there whatever he wants if you don’t like what he shares there don’t follow it. Also as if it was shown accidentally they wouldn’t do a big deal out of it.
When they get tired of insta or any sm don’t come here crying on why he deleted his acct. As if your very favorite hobbie isn’t policing their every little action there.
At this point the truth is that you don’t want to hear to whatever music or anything he shares there because it seems to me like you’re are bullying this man just for the sake of it.
Like people always have an issue with everything he shares there: he listened to “Life goes on” and people were calling inhumane just because it was the same day of the shake in Turkey. Listened to “bad religion” people called islamophove. Listened to this one and people is calling him an abuser. Shared a post of Halloween last year before the tragedy and they were calling him heartless. Shared a post about a song about rain because the rainy season had just started but oh surprise there were floods on SK and here they accusing him of romanticing rain. Shares a post about his vacations with family and people start saying that his sister is his gf. Shares a post with his friends and people say that they are his boyfriends. Shares a post with a girl and there they go again.
Like at some point they have used every label on this man and have accused him of many things that I don’t how he has the patience and endurence to not just snap. It wouldn’t surprise me that one day we wake up and rkive is gone.
It seems that to be at the top you need to be made of steel. And in this very case because is a group they want to go for the head first.
It feels like a game, hobby, tradition or something. It’s like people wake up and the first thought is: ” let’s see what did namjoon of bts posted on insta to see if we’re successful in starting a hate train again.
Ugh unfortunately this isn’t the first time Joon has mentioned CB (or other members), but this is really disappointing. I find it hard to believe in 2023, that he hasn’t heard about him and his history of abuse.
I do not understand how CB still has a career or the hold he has over idols in South Korea.
I’m definitely side eyeing Joon for this. Supporting CB is a red flag for me. I don’t think this makes Joon a bad person, but yeah he knows full well what kind of reaction he can get from posting songs on his story
